Sciences of the Kazak SSR as the result of reorganization
of chemic-technological Institute in 1945, now is the
prominent scientific center in the Republic of Kazakhstan,
making fundamental studies in the field of the theory of metallurgical processes, development and pro-motion of new higly-effective technologies of the production of non-ferrous, rare noble and ferrous metals and preparation of scientists-metallurgists of highest qualification in the field of non-ferrous metallurgy.
At the issue of the formation of the Institute were such prominent scientists - metallurgists as Ermekov M.A., Sokolov M.A.,Ponomarev U.D., Smirnov U.I, Tseft A.L, Avetisyan Kh.K.

Significant contribution into creation and development of new scientific directions at the Institute have made: Academicians of NAN RK A.M. Kunaev, S.M. Kozhakhmetov, L.P. Ni, Corresponding Members of NAN RK B.B. Beisembaev, R.A. Isakova, E.I. Ponomareva, I.A. Onaev, A.I. Zazubin, S.M. Zubakov, M.A. Sokolov, B. L.Levintov, D.N.Abishev, A.A. Zharmenov; Doctors of sciences,N.A. Baitenev, Abisheva Z.S., Kenzhaliev B.K, A.Yu. Dadabaev, A.I. Kvyatkovski, I.R. Polyvyanyi, L.G. Romanov, M.M. Spivak, V.V. Kozlov, G.A. Romanov, A.N. Zagorodnyaya; Yu.I. Suharnikov, V.A. Lata, R.Z Zhalelev, Zh.A.Alybaev, A.T. Shoinbaev,V.S. Candidate of technical sciences V.S.Esyutin and others.
The scientists of the Institute were making their studies in the close coordi-nation with leading scientists of Kazakhstan and CIS (UNIITsvetmet, Kazgiprots-vetmet, MISIS, Gintsvetmet, Giprotsvetmet, IMET AN SSSR named after A.A. Baikov, IMET UF AN SSSR, Kazginalmazzoloto, VAMI, KhMI, UPI Unipromed and others).
At the big achievement of the Institute was the development and introduc-tion into practice of autogenous processes. For example, KIVTSET method of melting of copper - zinc concentrates and semiproducts was introduced in 1974 on Irtysh copper - smelting plant, and the process of melting of sulphide concentrates in liquid bath from matte - slag melt (Vanyukov,s process) in 1985-1987 has completely tranferred Balkhash copper - smelting plant. Technology and melting aggregate for the melting in liquid bath, developed with participation of IMIO, were introduced on the Norilsk and Sredneuralsk copper - smelting plants in Russia.
Important perspective has new technology of processing of Zhezkazgan copper concentrates, including electrosmelting of melting stock, converting of mattes rich by copper with utilization for the first time in the world of liqiud slags from electromelting as the fluxes and heat carriers.
Principally new technological schemes and corresponding equipment were developed for the vacuum metallurgy of non - ferrous and rare metals on the base of deep fundamental studies. Vacuum process of refining of black tin was introduced on Novosibirsk tin plant, and later by the licence of the Institute, in Bolivia, Australia, Spain and some other countries.
Important fundamental and applied studies and developments were made in the field of lead metallurgy and accompaning it metals - associated minerals. To them belong: physico - chemistry and technology of metallurgy of thiosalts of metals, highly effective technology of processing of complex lead - antimony raw materials, electrothermal methods of melting of the secondary lead raw materials and oxidative - reductive technology of agglomeration roasting and reduction, shaft - furnace melting of lead raw materials.
Fundamental studies and developments of technologies of pyro - and hydro - metallurgical schemes of extraction of alloying metals from rare - metallic difficult to process raw materials of Kazakhstan are made, process of combined melting of phosphorites and vanadium - containing quarzites from Karatau are developed in industrial scale, and in semi - industrial scale - processes of vanadium and niobium extraction from phosphorus - containing materials.
New extraction technology of vanadium oxide extraction from semiproducts of titanium processing, aluminia production and industrial solutions of NPO "Tulachermet" are introduced.
Have been developed on the basis of fundamental and applied studies in the field of alumina metallurgy: technological scheme of Bayer - hydrochemistry, method of complex processing of high siliceous bauxite raw materials and tech-nology of complex processing of red oxide of iron and nephelines and also technological schemes of processing of low - quality bauxites of Kazakhstan, assimi-lated on Pavlodar aluminium plant.
Creation of physico-chemical bases, technology and utilization of gallam metallurgy has allowed to increase 20 times gallium production, and to conclude some licence and optional agreements for delivery of gallium from Kazakhstan to Japan, Schwitzerland and FRG.
Perspective scientific studies and developments in the field of creation and utilization of bio-geotechnological methods of processing of lean and non-conditional polymetallic ores considerably enlarge raw materials base of non-ferrous metallurgy of this Republic and are highly-effective ecologically-clean technologies of processing of ores of non-ferrous and noble metals on the level of the best world,s achievements. For the first time in the geological practice lean copper ores of Aktogai, Aidarly ore deposits and gold-containing ores of Vasilkov-ski ore deposit are transferred into the class of industrial ores.
Project of industrial field of underground leeching of lead-zinc ores lost during extracion on worked off mine of Koksu ore deposit in region Tekeli was made for the first time.
Highly-effective ecologically clean bacterial-chemical technology of gold-extraction from low-grade ores and disposal of worked off tailings and waste wa-ters from cyanids and arsenic for the first time in the CIS-countries was imple-mented on the equipment of Vasilkovski GOK.
Institute is making perspective studies and developments in the field of the theory and technology of ore benefication of non-ferrous and noble metals, pro-duction of new refractories for non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy from periclase and periclase-spinel materials with modifyng additions.
Institute has new teoretical developments and technologies of extraction of rare, rarefied and rare - earth materials from semiproducts of metallurgi-cal,chemical and power industries. Introduction of the methods of extraction of rhenium indium, thallium, molybdenium and other elements has allowed to in-crease sighificantly the degree of complex utilization of raw materials and for the first time to organize the production of these elements.
Achievements in the region of development of metallurgical science and practice have received high estimation and recognition on the symposia and con-ferences abroad (USA, Canada, Switzeland, Germany, England, China, Spain, Ko-rea, Belgium, CSR, Japan, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Russia, a.o.).
More than 30 doctoral theses and more than 300 theses of candidates were prepared and defended at the walls of this Institute. 7 Academicians and 12 Corre-sponding Members of NAN RK were elected from the leading scientists of this Institute.
High estimation is given to the results of fruitful activity of 16 scientists - metallurgists from this
